Motorola announces Moto Z3 with Snapdragon 835 SoC, dual cameras and 5G Moto Mod
Lenovo-owned Motorola has announced the Moto Z3, the company’s latest flagship smartphone, along with the 5G Moto Mod at an event in Chicago. This is the first flagship smartphone from the company this year and it is the successor of the Moto Z2 Force.
The Moto Z3, just like its predecessor, has Moto Mods support, allowing users to connect various mods using the pogo-pin connector at the back. Even though Google and LG have given up on the idea of modular phones, Motorola is continuing with this.
The company has announced a 5G Moto Mod that uses a Snapdragon 850 modem and millimeter wave components, that will make it the world’s first smartphone with access to Verizon’s 5G network. Verizon is expected to roll out 5G services across 4 cities in the US in early 2019 and Moto Z3 users with the 5G Moto Mod will be able to use gigabit speeds. The company also said that the 5G Moto Mod will also work with the Moto Z2.
Motorola has used aircraft-grade 6000 series aluminum for the frame of the device and it has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection at the front and the back. It also has water repellent nano-coating. Unlike the Moto Z2 Force that featured a front-mounted fingerprint sensor, the Moto Z3 Play sports a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and the company has also ditched the front home button.
Moto Z3 Specifications
The Moto Z3 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box and offers a stock Android experience to users. It features a 6-inch full HD+ (2160 x 1080 pixels) resolution Super AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection and an aspect ratio of 18:9.
In terms of performance, the Moto Z3 is powered by an octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC coupled with Adreno 540 GPU. It is strange that Motorola has opted for the Snapdragon 835 SoC that was launched last year instead of the Snapdragon 845 SoC. In terms of memory, the device has been launched in one variant only with 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage.
Coming to the camera department, the Moto Z3 features a 12-megapixel + 12-megapixel dual camera setup with f/2.0 aperture, 1.25um pixel size, Laser Autofocus and dual LED flash. On the front, the device sports an 8-megapixel selfie camera with 1.12um pixel size, f/2.0 aperture, 84° wide-angle lens and screen flash.
The Moto Z3 is powered by a 3,000mAh battery with Turbocharging support and connectivity options on the device include 4G VoLTE, WiFi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC and a USB Type-C port. The device does not feature a 3.5mm audio jack and users will have use the USB Type-C port to connect their headphones.
Pricing and Availability
The Moto Z3 has been priced at $480 (Rs. 33,020 approx.) if users wish to get it without a contract and $20 per month for 24 months on contract with Verizon starting from August 16. The 5G Moto Mod is expected to be available once Verizon commences its 5G services
