Jabra Elite 65e 65e review: Almost hits the right notes
Headphones probably are the major consumer-oriented segment, which not only has to be best in performance but has to bring comfort and ease through its smartness. With features like one-touch voice command, ability to make and receive calls, headphones are raising the bar to cater to what the customers actually want. One such headphone is the Jabra Elite 65e. The device is offered by the Denmark-based audio firm, Jabra which is making all the right noises in this highly competitive market. With Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and voice assistant like features, the headphone seems to offer a lot. But how does it actually perform? Read the review and to know the answer.
Design
Jabra Elite 65e is a lightweight, aesthetically simple neckband. They are made up of plastic and rubber largely that rests easy on shoulders. To the right side are the two volume control buttons and a power button. The volume buttons, pressed longer can also control the music/songs being played for forward and backward operations. The power button similarly controls the play/pause part of the headphones. The left side features a microphone and button to control virtual voice assistants like Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant. But be warned, don’t expect the voice commands to be as smooth as on your smartphone device. You might have to repeat before the voice command is truly interpreted precisely. So, the ‘one-touch’ access to voice assistant is not really a one-time action.
Coming to the back of the neckband, the rear side has a micro-USB port to charge the headphones. We will come to the battery performance later. The headphone has slightly large earbuds (didn’t fit into our ears, despite the fact that there were three different sizes to choose from!). So, not many will find the true earbud fit with Jabra Elite 65e. The earbuds do not get entangled, thanks to the in-built magnets. The earbuds, though were soft on ears and the fins try to support as much as possible.
Overall there were no major issues with the design, except for the fact that the neckband could not make a firm grip of one’s neck and usually slips off the neck. This is even more problematic while doing physical activity like running as the band starts to bounce along and creates a discomfort. Performance
Let us straight away come to the much-touted ‘Active Noise Cancellation’ or ANC feature of the headphone. Whether you are listening to music or are on a call using the headphone, there is background sound, audible enough to make sense out of what is being said or done. The ANC performance is mediocre. For example, if you are travelling on the Delhi Metro and are listening to music over the headphones, you can clearly hear the announcements being made.
In terms of sound quality, Jabra 65e offers more than satisfactory, balanced sound. No glitch or voice breaks were witnessed while making calls. For music lovers, the headphones are a treat to ears. The Sound+ app (not mandatory to install) allows one to set bass and treble as they may like. But, this can again be a minus point, as not many will have a sound knowledge of musical notes to set them. A preset would have been more preferable. However, this aspect is not a major one to dislike the Jabra Elite 65e
Without the app, the headphones connect to a smartphone through Bluetooth. The Bluetooth connection was seamless and smooth. We did not face any issue of disconnect or any other glitch.
Coming to the battery performance, we think that the company claims too much when it says it gives 8 hours with ANC and 13 hours without ANC. After a single charge, the headphone managed to play for an average of two-day 3 hours commute time for me with a mix of ANC and no-ANC. (This may be subjective to the commuting distance as well !) But, we still hold that the battery power is a bit exaggerated.
